ASIR-SABA results: for access to water, rural sanitation and peace building in Colombia

Since 2015, ASIR-SABA has positioned itself as a model that seeks to strengthen community water management processes in Colombia. In 2017 the Swiss Embassy - Humanitarian Aid and Development (COSUDE) started the second phase and together with community water leaders have cooperated, strengthened their capacities and contributed to more rural households having access to water. This road has encouraged the implementation of a third phase because the process has contributed to building peace in territories where violence still persists.

ASIR-SABA trained 72 people from rural communities and institutions in sustainable rural water and sanitation management

Within the framework of capacity building and in partnership with the Pan American Development Foundation - PADF and the University of Cauca, a diploma course was held: "Sustainable Management of Rural Water and Sanitation". The diploma course was held between January 17 and April 15, 2020 with a total of 72 participants from local, community and institutional organizations from different municipalities such as Popayán, Cali, Caloto, Santander de Quilichao and Corinto.

The limited access to drinking water in rural Colombia and the health problems arising from this situation were the main reasons for designing a health education strategy within the framework of the ASIR-SABA project. The ASIR SABA Rural Water and Sanitation proposal, led by the Swiss Embassy in Colombia, Humanitarian Aid and Development - (COSUDE), seeks to promote sustainable development actions in the water and sanitation sector, in articulation with some communities in territories that do not have water services suitable for human consumption, so that, jointly, peace is built in the territories and a society of opportunities is promoted to close social gaps.
